- Gather Family Information and Draw a Family Tree: Provide relevant information about your family members, significant relationships, and any relevant family history or events related to the issue. This information will assist the facilitator in setting up the constellation accurately.
- Emotional Readiness:Family Constellation work can be emotionally intense and may bring up deep feelings or unresolved emotions. Be prepared to approach the session with an open mind and emotional readiness to explore your inner landscape.
- Trust the Process:Trust the process of Family Constellation and be willing to allow insights to unfold naturally. Avoid having specific expectations or trying to control the outcome of the session.
Drawing a Family Tree: Exploring Our Family with Love and Respect
When drawing your family tree, approach the exercise with love and respect. If intense emotions or feelings arise, kindly pause, take a few deep breaths, and then continue.
Complete the family tree by tracing it back to the furthest generation you can recall. Even individuals you haven’t met but have heard about from family members are valuable to include. Specific individuals within our system may be involved in the power of entanglement, categorized based on their bloodline/biological and non-bloodline/non- biological relationships. Approach this exploration with care and compassion, respecting each person’s significance within the family system.
When creating your family tree, endeavour to gather the following information to the best of your ability:
● Were there any stillborn or immature deaths in the family?
● Did any parents pass away when you were little?
● Was there any family member who was sent away, adopted, or considered illegitimate?
● Were your parents each other’s first lovers (were they married, engaged, or in a previous relationship before)?
● Were there any miscarriages or abortions?
● Were there any family secrets (such as rejected family members, unequal distribution of assets, improper benefits, etc.)?
● Were there any crimes (such as murder, being murdered, injurious behaviour, etc.)?
● Were there any members who had critical illnesses, developmental delays, or addictions (e.g., gambling, alcoholism, etc.)?
● Were there any family members with psychotic issues, who committed suicide, or engaged in violence, etc.?
● Were there any immigrants in the family?
How does 1:1 Family Constellations Are Conducted?
1:1 Family Constellations can be conducted using various methods and techniques, each tailored to suit the client’s needs and preferences. Here are some common ways to conduct one-on-one family constellations:
1. Figurine or Paper Constellations: Clients may use figurines or drawings on paper to represent family members and elements. This approach can be done in person or online, depending on the clients’ location and preferences.
2. Guided Visualization: In some cases, the facilitator may use guided visualization techniques instead of physical representations. The client is led through a visualization exercise where they mentally represent family members and elements. This approach can be helpful for clients who prefer a more inward-focused exploration.
3. Family Genogram: A genogram is a visual representation of a client’s family tree, including family relationships and patterns. Facilitators may use genograms in one-on-one sessions to explore family dynamics and connections.
4. Combined Approaches: Facilitators may integrate various techniques and approaches depending on the clients’ needs and the specific issue being addressed. The method used can be a combination of physical representations, guided visualization, body-based exploration, and more. Regardless of the method used, the key is to create a safe and supportive space for the client to explore their family.
